FDISK : The Built In Partitioning Tool

For Windows 95B - 95C (OSR2), 98, 98SE with FAT32

If you are using Windows 98 it is recommended that you create a Fat32EBD diskette from your Win 98 CD. It is located in the Tools\MtsUtil\Fat32EBD folder which also contains the Fat32EBD.txt file with instructions for making the diskette.

A Win95B or 98 StartUp diskette can be supplemented for the Fat32EBD diskette as well, just take note of the location of the FDISK, FORMAT & SYS files - they may be different using this diskette, which may create in a RAM drive that allocates a temporary drive letter.

For Windows 95C read as for Windows 95B

  1.  Boot with your Win95B or 98 diskette, type FDISK at the A:\> prompt, and follow these instructions.

  1. The first screen you'll see is this.......

Your computer has a disk larger than 512 MB. This version of
Windows includes improved support for large disks, resulting in
more efficient use of disk space on large drives, and allowing
disks over 2 GB to be formatted as a single drive.

IMPORTANT: If you enable large disk support and create any new
drives on this disk, you will not be able to access the new
drive(s) using other operating systems, including some versions of
Windows 95 and Windows NT, as well as earlier versions of Windows
and MS-DOS. In addition, disk utilities that were not designed
explicitly for the FAT32 file system will not be able to work with
this disk. If you need to access this disk with other operating
systems or older disk utilities, do not enable large drive support.

Do you wish to enable large disk support (Y/N)...........? [Y]

  1. Select "Y" if you wish to partition using the FAT32 file system or "N" if you want to use the FAT16 file system.

»» Take note that the following instructions are for systems with only one hard drive present. The same info applies as long as you are sure that you have changed the Current Fixed Disk using the # 5. option (NOT SHOWN HERE) and select the appropriate physical hard drive in question before moving on to step 4.
